Discussion on Cooperation Measures for Copyright Industries between Korea and the Philippines

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Copyright Commission will hold an online Korea-Philippines copyright forum at 2 p.m. on the 24th. They will share the current status of copyright laws and systems in both countries and discuss cooperation measures for the development of related industries. The theme is "Changes in the Copyright Industry Environment and Strategies for Leading the Copyright Utilization Industry." Jeong Jae-gon, Head of Policy Research at the Korea Copyright Commission, and Emerson Cuyo, Director of the Copyright Division at the Philippine Intellectual Property Office, will present the growth processes of the copyright industries in their respective countries. Success case presentations will be given by Kwak Tae-jung, Manager of Arimoa, Lee Ho-jun, Head of Legal Team at Kakao Entertainment, and Paolo Heras, CEO of Comiket. The following Q&A session will be moderated by Jeong Jin-geun, Professor at Kangwon National University School of Law.

According to the "Intellectual Property Trade Balance" announced by the Bank of Korea, the intellectual property trade balance for the first half of this year recorded a surplus of $1.96 billion (approximately 2.3 trillion KRW). This marks the ninth consecutive year of surplus since turning positive in 2013. Notably, last year’s copyright exports amounted to about 13 trillion KRW, more than twice the industrial property rights exports (5.2 trillion KRW). A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, "The copyright industry is a key growth engine in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and its importance is increasing." They added, "The Philippines has recently strengthened production in design, animation, and video content, raising expectations for the copyright industry. This discussion will be highly meaningful for both countries."
