[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 23rd, Sim Sang-jung, the Justice Party presidential candidate, commented on the news of former President Jeon Du-hwan's death, saying, "He left without ever revealing the truth or apologizing for the Gwangju massacre," and added, "A death without reflection is itself guilty."
On the same day, Sim said through Facebook, "The deep wounds of history have become solely the burden of the citizens of Gwangju and the people," expressing her view.
She evaluated, "Jeon Du-hwan has passed away, but has the era of Jeon Du-hwan truly ended? This heavy question still remains."
She continued, "The work of reclaiming the light of May must continue without interruption," emphasizing, "We must uncover the truths hidden in the shadows and firmly hold those responsible accountable."
Regarding the state funeral, she expressed strong opposition. Sim stated, "If we recognize history, I hope the idea of a state funeral will not even be dared to be mentioned," and added, "Above all, I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the May 18 victims who must be feeling great sorrow at this time."
