[AKYUNG Poll] Half of the People Negative on Yoon Seok-yeol and Ahn Cheol-soo Unification


[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] It has been revealed that half of the nation views the prospect of unification between Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, and Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People Party, negatively.


When asked, "How do you foresee the unification talks between candidate Yoon and candidate Ahn?" 48% of respondents answered, "They will not unify." Meanwhile, 11.2% said, "Don't know."


On the other hand, 40.8% believed that unification would occur. Among them, 36.3% predicted unification under candidate Yoon, while 4.5% expected unification under candidate Ahn.


Breaking down those who think unification will not happen by age group, people in their 40s were the highest at 58.3%. This was followed by ages 18-29 (54.1%), 30s (52.9%), 50s (44.9%), and 60 and above (36.7%). By region, 58.5% in Gwangju, Jeonbuk, and Jeonnam denied the possibility of unification. Additionally, in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong, a majority of 54.6% also predicted that unification would not occur.


Supporters of the People Power Party and the People Party, where candidates Yoon and Ahn belong respectively, predicted unification to be difficult at rates of 30.1% and 26%. Among those supporting candidate Yoon, 27.6% were negative about unification, but 62.4% chose the possibility of unification under candidate Yoon.


This survey was conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting from the 20th to 21st of last month targeting voters nationwide aged 18 and older. A total of 1,025 people responded, with an overall response rate of 7.5%. The survey method was 100% wireless ARS using virtual mobile phone numbers. The sample was extracted with weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
