Korea Road Traffic Authority Holds Joint Demonstration Using 'Digital Traffic Signal Information'

Demonstration of Real-Time Traffic Signal Information Service for Autonomous Vehicles

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The Korea Road Traffic Authority held a joint demonstration using 'digital traffic signal information' on the 22nd on a road near the Daegu Intelligent Automobile Parts Promotion Institute.

The Authority operates a digital traffic signal information provision system to support the safe operation of autonomous vehicles and improve traffic convenience for general drivers in preparation for the commercialization of autonomous vehicles.

Previously, the Authority demonstrated the excellence of the technology by successfully enabling autonomous vehicles to drive in all directions at an intersection using signal information in Suseong Alpha City, Daegu, last year. Since then, the Authority and Daegu City have signed a business agreement for the development of future transportation infrastructure technology and are working to open real-time signal information across Daegu.

The Authority, through this demonstration, enabled autonomous vehicles to receive digital traffic signal information even in situations where on-site police officers manually control traffic due to congestion. Additionally, it provides information on unprotected left turns, allowing autonomous vehicles to use this information for driving, and is continuously developing related technologies to ensure ongoing utilization of signal information.

Lee Jumin, Chairman of the Korea Road Traffic Authority, stated, "This joint demonstration has established a foundation for autonomous vehicles to operate in all regions nationwide, and soon, general drivers will also be able to receive services utilizing real-time signal information."
