[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Hwang Eui-tak, a member of the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Council (Democratic Party of Korea·Muju), proposed a recommendation to amend the Feed Management Act to mandate the addition of odor reducers to livestock feed, which is the cause of odor from livestock manure, in order to increase the effectiveness of odor reduction and distribute it to livestock farms.
At the 2nd plenary session of the 386th regular meeting, Councilor Hwang stated, “In response to the rapidly increasing complaints about livestock odors, laws such as the Odor Prevention Act and the Livestock Manure Act are being strengthened,” and pointed out, “Although the government and local governments spend hundreds of billions of won annually on direct and indirect budgets to prepare reduction measures, it is still insufficient to reduce livestock odors.”
Councilor Hwang also diagnosed, “Most of the livestock odor reduction projects conducted by the government and local governments are only concerned with measures after the odor occurs.”
Accordingly, through the proposal, Councilor Hwang argued, “Since research results have shown that adding odor reducers to feed before the occurrence of livestock manure and feeding it can significantly reduce the odor of livestock manure, the Feed Management Act should be amended to mandate mixing odor reducers at the feed manufacturing stage and distributing it to farms.”
Meanwhile, according to the results of an experiment conducted over six months at two pig farms in Gimje and Iksan, led by city/county and the Microbial Industry Promotion Support Center for Agriculture and Livestock, farms that supplied feed mixed with microbial agents showed significantly greater odor reduction effects compared to those that did not.
