Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon Awards Honorary Citizenship to President Carlos Alvarado During His Visit to Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Carlos Alvarado, President of Costa Rica, will become an honorary citizen of Seoul.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that Carlos Alvarado, President of Costa Rica, who is visiting Korea, will visit Seoul on the 22nd, where Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will present him with an honorary citizenship certificate.
President Carlos Alvarado was elected as the youngest president in Costa Rican history at the age of 38 in 2018 and has served as Minister of Labor and Director of Social Welfare. During his tenure, he announced a decarbonization national plan and actively participates in international efforts to address climate change, making Costa Rica a model environmental protection country in Central America.
Following the honorary citizenship certificate ceremony, Mayor Oh and President Carlos Alvarado will continue their meeting to discuss strengthening economic cooperation with Costa Rica, which became the 38th member of the OECD this year, as well as ways to promote exchanges in the environmental and digital sectors in the post-COVID-19 era.
Meanwhile, the awarding of honorary citizenship certificates by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to major foreign dignitaries marks the 36th time it has been given to a head of state, with President Iv?n Carlos Alvarado of Costa Rica being the 36th. So far, a total of five prominent individuals from Costa Rica have received honorary citizenship certificates, and President Carlos Alvarado will be the sixth.
Yoon Jong-jang, Director of Citizen Communication Planning at Seoul City, said, "2022 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Costa Rica, making it a special year. It is very meaningful that President Carlos Alvarado has become an honorary citizen of Seoul at such an important time," adding, "We hope that the president's visit will lead to expanded exchanges between Seoul and major cities in Costa Rica, providing an opportunity to promote overseas expansion of companies and activate exchanges in the environmental and digital fields."
