Increase in Top Grade Share for Math 'Hwaktong'... Calculus 69.9% · Hwaktong 21.3%

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] An analysis has emerged that the top-tier score share in the mathematics section of the 2022 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) will see an increase in Probability and Statistics and a decrease in Calculus.

On the 18th, Etoos Education released the preliminary 2022 CSAT top-tier score shares by elective subjects. For mathematics, Calculus accounts for 69.9%, Probability and Statistics 21.3%, and Geometry 8.7%.

Although Calculus still holds a high share, it is analyzed that its share has somewhat eased compared to previous mock exams.

The top-tier score share among those who chose Calculus dropped from 82.4% in June to 76.9% in September, and further to 69.9% in this year’s CSAT.

On the other hand, the share of Probability and Statistics test-takers was only 9% in June, but increased to 13.1% in September and is estimated at 21.3% in the CSAT.

Geometry’s expected share based on the CSAT is 8.7%, which is the same as the June mock exam and lower than September’s 10%.

The 2022 CSAT mathematics section saw an increase in difficulty for the common subjects, and many evaluations noted that the difficulty of Probability and Statistics and Geometry among elective subjects was somewhat high. Sample data also showed an increase in the proportion of top-tier scorers who chose Probability and Statistics.

In the Korean language section, the gap between top-tier scores in Speech and Writing and Language and Media was the smallest in this CSAT. According to Etoos Education’s estimates, the top-tier score share for Speech and Writing was 21.3%, and for Language and Media, 69.9%.

Kim Byungjin, head of the Etoos Education Evaluation Research Institute, explained, "The rise in the top-tier score share among Probability and Statistics test-takers is the highest among the three exams conducted since the CSAT system changed. This is interpreted as a result reflecting the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation’s intention to mitigate the advantages and disadvantages among elective subjects in the test trends."
