Hanwha Co., Ltd. Establishes New Precision-Guided Weapon Production Facility

Completion of Advanced Precision-Guided Weapon Development and Manufacturing Facility at Boeun Site

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hanwha Corporation completed the construction of a state-of-the-art precision guided weapon development and manufacturing facility covering 130,000㎡ (approximately 39,000 pyeong) at its Boeun plant in Chungbuk on the 18th.

With this completion, Hanwha's Boeun plant has become the only domestic precision guided weapon production facility capable of developing and producing key components of guided missiles such as warheads and propulsion systems, as well as system integration, all in a single location.

Since 2019, Hanwha has been expanding new facilities to equip advanced equipment for large-scale guided weapon production. Unmanned, remote, and automated technologies have also been introduced to enhance process safety. Going forward, the Boeun plant will produce a complex range of guided weapons of various calibers, from small to large.

Long-range surface-to-air guided missiles (L-SAM) ABM, which intercept enemy ballistic missiles with hit-to-kill capability tens of kilometers above South Korea's airspace, are also being developed here. Currently, the military operates Cheongung-II and Patriot systems for lower-tier defense. The successful deployment of L-SAM, responsible for upper-tier defense, is essential to complete the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system.

In December last year, Hanwha was designated by the Agency for Defense Development as the prototype developer for the L-SAM ABM guided missile integrated system.

Kim Seung-mo, CEO of Hanwha Corporation and Defense Division, stated, "The infrastructure capable of developing and producing various guided weapon systems has been completed," adding, "We will make every effort to strengthen self-reliant defense through continuous investment in advanced weapon system manufacturing."
