"iPhone Battery Replacement DIY" Apple to Sequentially Launch Self-Repair Program Starting in the US

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Apple has decided to introduce a ‘Self Service Repair Program’ that allows users to repair certain iPhone malfunctions by themselves.

Apple announced on the 18th that it will launch the Self Service Repair Program for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 starting early next year in the United States. The program will gradually expand the supported models and regions.

With the introduction of this program, Apple customers will be able to repair their devices themselves using genuine Apple parts, tools, and manuals, just like more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) and over 2,800 independent repair service providers.

Customers will be able to perform repairs themselves using genuine parts and tools. They will have access to Apple’s genuine parts, tools, and manuals, just like more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) and over 2,800 independent repair service providers. Apple plans to focus the self-repair items on displays, batteries, and cameras, with support for other repairs starting in the second half of next year.

Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, said, “This is about expanding access to genuine parts to provide customers who need repairs with more options,” adding, “Over the past three years, Apple has more than doubled the number of service providers able to offer genuine parts, tools, and training, enabling us to provide this program.”

Apple has maintained strict internal regulations regarding iPhone repairs. Even a record of repair by a non-authorized service provider could result in refusal of part replacements or repairs under warranty.

Although Apple has nearly doubled the number of repair centers over the past three years, consumer complaints about the inconvenience of repairs have been significant. Apple’s decision to allow users to repair their devices themselves appears to be in response to these consumer concerns.

The Biden administration also instructed the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in July to improve practices by some electronics companies, including Apple, that limit consumer choices related to repairs.
