SK Inno Utilizes 'Virtual Reality' for Equipment Inspection Training at Ulsan CLX

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Innovation is utilizing virtual reality (VR) in the inspection training program at its main production site, Ulsan Complex (Ulsan CLX).

On the 18th, SK Innovation announced that SK Energy's Machinery, Equipment, and Inspection Department has added a VR-based program to its inspection training course. This is to help beginner inspectors gain effective experience in equipment inspection and diagnosis even outside of scheduled maintenance periods.

The newly introduced VR inspection training program is one of the achievements of the 'Smart Plant' initiative at Ulsan CLX, which integrates AI and big data technologies across all processes. The VR training program was created to provide a highly immersive experience, allowing users to explore the Aromatics Manufacturing Process (NAC) Continuous Catalyst Regeneration (CCR) Reactor and Heater in 360 degrees.

The VR training program enables learners to actively examine the process and internal structure of the equipment using VR devices without visiting the site. In particular, it is designed to include Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) training as well. SK Innovation plans to develop and expand VR training programs for tank facilities, offshore equipment, and special equipment within processes in other operational areas.

Kim Hong-gu, Head of SK Energy's Equipment Division, said, "Through the newly developed VR training program at Ulsan CLX, realistic training is now possible without visiting the site," adding, "We will continue to promote digital transformation by expanding this to other processes at Ulsan CLX."
