[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] "Openness and collaboration play a key role in driving innovation in software development."
Seunghyun Jun, President of Samsung Research, emphasized this in his welcoming address at the 'Samsung Software Developer Conference (SSDC)' held online on the 18th, adding, "We hope SSDC becomes a platform for global developers to exchange technology and collaborate by learning, sharing, and communicating across broader fields."
Samsung Electronics expanded and reorganized the 'Samsung Open Source Conference,' which has been held since 2014, to establish SSDC this year as a venue for internal and external developers to interact across all areas of software.
At the conference, the latest technologies useful to software developers, including open source, were discussed across various fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), security, cloud, and metaverse (extended virtual world).
Seungbeom Choi, Vice President of Samsung Research, explained Samsung Electronics' open source promotion strategy in his keynote speech, stating, "We will continuously contribute to open source innovation and development through diverse cooperation and communication with developers."
The keynote speech introduced Samsung Electronics' systematic efforts to utilize open source, including ▲new participation in open source projects in AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and security fields this year ▲nurturing talented personnel through support for internal open source developers and collaboration with external developers ▲obtaining international standard certification for the 'OpenChain Project' led by the Linux Foundation.
Keynote lectures were also held on topics such as software development know-how from renowned developers, growth stories of young developers, and the development culture of Samsung Electronics employees.
Professor Hyesik Jang of the Department of Biotechnology at Seoul National University, a computational biologist and Korea’s first Python committer (a core developer in the programming language 'Python'), gave a lecture on completing the genomic map of the COVID-19 virus using Python.
Additionally, Hyesoon Jung, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Business Division, and Baekjun Lim, Executive Director of Samsung Research, held a dialogue answering pre-submitted questions under the theme "Samsung Executives Speak Directly About Samsung’s Software Development Culture and Developers."
Meanwhile, in the technical sessions, representatives from various fields including Samsung Electronics, Microsoft, Kakao, startups, and software education institutions participated in lectures. Developers shared the latest software technologies and excellent development cases related to AI, security, cloud, and metaverse through the technical sessions.
A session was also arranged for outstanding trainees of the 5th class of Samsung’s youth social contribution program, 'Samsung Youth SW Academy (SSAFY),' to present their experiences participating in Samsung open source projects in AI and IoT fields.
Samsung Electronics stated, "We plan to continue strengthening developer exchanges to contribute to the expansion of the software ecosystem."
