[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Display announced on the 17th that it received the Presidential Award at the '2021 Korea Industrial Technology R&D Exhibition Technology Awards Ceremony' held at COEX in Seoul for its automotive (Auto) plastic organic light-emitting diode (POLED) display, which it developed and successfully commercialized for the first time in the world.

LG Display's Auto POLED, developed for the first time in the world, is a future-oriented large-area display that meets the technical specifications of global major automobile manufacturers requiring high reliability even in harsh usage environments, and has been recognized for its technological innovation and excellence by successfully commercializing it.

Based on differentiated technology, thorough quality control, and stable supply capabilities, it is evaluated to have secured global production competitiveness in POLED panel and module processes, which are next-generation display technologies.

Auto POLED features the ability to realize 'real black,' a unique advantage of OLED without a backlight, providing high visibility during both day and night. LG Display explained that compared to liquid crystal displays (LCDs), it has fewer components, reducing volume and weight, which significantly improves electricity costs in electric vehicles. Leading global automakers are adopting this technology for instrument panels and infotainment systems.

LG Display's strategy is to actively foster its automotive display business based on its proprietary technology as the vehicle display market grows by more than 10% annually, and as vehicles increasingly feature larger product sizes and multiple displays.

Kim Myung-kyu, Vice President and Head of LG Display's Mobile Business Division, said, "We will continue to provide new customer value that cannot be realized with existing displays through new OLED technology."

Meanwhile, the Korea Technology Awards, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is the most prestigious technology awards ceremony in Korea, recognizing companies, research institutes, and universities that have developed new technologies and products with outstanding technical achievements and significant impact on domestic industry.
