Supply of Rolling Stock, Power, and Overhead Line Equipment for 9.3km Northern Extension of Kaohsiung Red Line
Hyundai Rotem has secured an urban railway project worth 207.8 billion KRW in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Hyundai Rotem is scheduled to supply rolling stock, power systems, and catenary systems for this project.
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Rotem announced on the 16th that it has secured an urban railway project worth 207.8 billion KRW in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.
This project is the Kaohsiung Red Line Northern Extension turnkey project ordered by the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Bureau (KMRTB). Hyundai Rotem won the project in a consortium with Singapore's STEE (ST Engineering Electronics Limited). In this project, which extends the existing Red Line by 9.3 km, Hyundai Rotem will supply the electric trains, power systems, and overhead catenary systems.
For this electric train, Hyundai Rotem focused on compatibility with the existing line while adding an air conditioning system that automatically supplies comfortable indoor air according to carbon dioxide concentration. Additionally, technologies enhancing passenger safety and convenience, such as improved emergency braking capability, were applied.
The electric trains will operate at a speed of 80 km/h and will be equipped with Hyundai Rotem's self-developed Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS). Hyundai Rotem explained that by utilizing TCMS, vehicle status and fault information can be automatically analyzed at the depot, reducing maintenance costs, and energy-saving effects can be achieved simultaneously through high-efficiency operation pattern analysis.
The Red Line, where Hyundai Rotem's electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems will be applied, has plans for a second extension, raising expectations for additional orders of electric trains and E&M projects. If the second extension plan, which adds 3.78 km (2 stations), is confirmed, additional electric trains will be deployed on the Red Line.
With this order, Hyundai Rotem expects to gain more momentum in targeting the Taiwanese railway market. In addition to the contracted Red Line Northern Extension, projects for the Red Line Southern Extension and the new Yellow Line, which is a circular line concept in Kaohsiung City, are also planned. A Hyundai Rotem official stated, "We will do our best to increase our influence in the local railway market by delivering high-quality electric trains."
