Expectations for Improved Convenience in License Acquisition and Renewal
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The Korea Road Traffic Authority announced on the 12th that it has established a system to access the results of dementia tests (screening tests, diagnostic tests) required for obtaining or renewing a driver's license for elderly drivers aged 75 and over in real time through an administrative information joint use network with Dementia Safety Centers.
Drivers aged 75 and over are required to undergo traffic safety education before obtaining or renewing their driver's license, and the cognitive ability test, a necessary dementia screening test during the education process, can be taken at 256 Dementia Safety Centers installed in public health centers nationwide.
Previously, since there was no administrative network inquiry system between the Authority and the Dementia Safety Centers, civil petitioners without dementia test papers had to visit the Dementia Safety Center in person to receive the test papers and then revisit the driver's license examination office, causing inconvenience.
With the establishment of this system linkage, the Authority and the Dementia Safety Centers can share dementia test results in real time, which is expected to resolve such inconveniences for civil petitioners.
Nam Taek-hwa, head of the Driver's License Headquarters at the Korea Road Traffic Authority, said, "With the establishment of this system, we will be able to minimize unnecessary on-site visits by elderly drivers and reduce social costs arising from time and economic factors," adding, "We will continue to strive to improve convenience for civil petitioners related to driver's licenses."
Meanwhile, traffic safety education for elderly drivers aged 75 and over can be registered on the Korea Road Traffic Authority's Safe Driving Integrated Civil Service website, and online education is also available through the Korea Road Traffic Authority e-Learning Center.
