[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering is accelerating its efforts to secure smart construction technology, solidifying its position as an industry-leading company.

On the 11th, Hyundai Engineering announced that it had finally selected 11 technologies in the ‘2021 HEC Smart Construction Technology Integrated Contest’ held last August to secure smart construction technology capabilities through Open Innovation.

This contest, targeting domestic startups, large and small-medium enterprises, domestic and international university (graduate) research teams, and research institutes, received over 80 submissions competing fiercely in 12 core smart construction technology fields including construction automation robots, AI, IoT, 3D scanning, modular housing, BIM, and solution areas for specific topics in plant, architecture, infrastructure, asset management, and safety.

Hyundai Engineering conducted a thorough evaluation on the appropriateness of development plans, technological excellence, and usability of outcomes, ultimately selecting 2 immediately applicable technologies and 9 technologies for development promotion.

The ‘Autonomous Painting Robot’ and ‘Semi-automatic Heavy Equipment Control’ technologies selected as immediately applicable will have test beds established on actual sites for technology verification to assess effectiveness. The 9 technologies for development promotion, including ‘Duct Cleaning Robot,’ ‘AI-based Automatic Drawing Recognition,’ and ‘High-rise Modular Exterior Insulation System,’ will receive various support through research funding and joint research.

The ‘Autonomous Painting Robot’ technology is an advanced technology expected to contribute to site safety and cost reduction by teaching the painting skills of skilled workers to an autonomous robot, enabling it to perform painting tasks that are difficult for humans to carry out directly. The ‘High-rise Modular Exterior Insulation System’ technology develops a modular dedicated integrated insulation system that maximizes insulation, fire resistance, waterproofing, and airtightness performance, while allowing the application of various designs of exterior materials.

A Hyundai Engineering official said, "The 11 innovative smart construction technologies and solutions selected through this contest are expected to contribute to creating a highly productive and safe construction environment once development is completed and applied on site," adding, "We plan to work with industry and academia to consider innovative technologies and achieve competitiveness enhancement and mutual growth with companies and academia through Open Innovation."
