[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) will actively promote research and development (R&D) on protection and utilization technologies specialized for personal information to protect data subjects' rights and support safe use in the data economy era.
The PIPC established and unveiled on the 10th the "Personal Information Protection and Utilization Technology R&D Roadmap (Roadmap)" outlining the research and development direction for the next five years.
This roadmap was developed considering the personal information protection and utilization technology classification system prepared by the PIPC, as well as domestic and international technology and standardization trends. It includes 11 core technologies and 37 detailed technologies across three major areas: ▲guaranteeing data subjects' rights ▲minimizing leakage and exposure ▲safe utilization.
To prepare the roadmap, the PIPC selected core technologies and mid-to-long-term tasks through the "R&D Roadmap Advisory Committee (Chairman Professor Yeom Heung-yeol of Soonchunhyang University)," composed of experts from industry, academia, and research institutes, and gathered opinions from related industries and experts through public forums. The roadmap will be continuously improved after its release by reflecting the status of private R&D and changes in research and development demands.
Yoon Jong-in, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, "Existing information security technologies are insufficient to effectively protect rights and support safe utilization in the data era," adding, "Amid the great transition to a digital society, we will lead a trusted data era for the public through the steady promotion of personal information protection and utilization technology R&D."
