The Second Act of a Homeless Life, Albatross Challenge Story
The nonprofit organization Samak-e Gil-eul Naeneun Saramdeul (hereinafter Sagilsa) supports homeless people and residents of small rooms to become independent, healthy members of society by assisting them from elementary school through university, various certifications, and employment.
When fierce storms blow and other birds hide, the "Albatross" is a persistent bird that flies vigorously and can circle the globe. Named after this bird, the "Albatross Scholarship Project" provides opportunities for homeless people and small-room residents, whose lives have become stormy through numerous failures, to live a second act in life.
After setting their own dreams as goals, they obtain related certifications. However, 80% of them have addictions or disabilities, and those with intellectual disabilities repeatedly fail the qualification exams or the high school equivalency test. Therefore, they complete graduation from night school elementary through high school and then proceed to university courses to earn certifications. They mainly aim to obtain certifications such as social worker, nurse, caregiver, disability activity supporter, calligraphy, and computer-related skills. So far, an average of 20 students aged 45 have completed their studies and are working in society, while 10 students are currently studying. Those undergoing the educational process attend diligently without absence and submit learning journals to systematize and enhance the effectiveness of their studies.
Student Kwon 00 has been living in Korea alone for five years after moving from Yanbian. As a dropout from elementary school, he is steadily learning from the first-grade elementary school curriculum. He expressed his aspirations, saying, "My Korean is poor, and school classes are very difficult, but my Korean husband, whom I met through this place (Samak-e Gil-eul Naeneun Saramdeul), is a great support, so I can keep going without giving up. Many people who need help gather here, and I want to be someone who is a great help to them."
Other students, including Kwon 00, also have painful stories and difficult situations but continue to challenge themselves. Samak-e Gil-eul Naeneun Saramdeul hopes many people will cheer on these individuals who have courageously started their challenges and is awaiting sponsorship and volunteer support.
