The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Hwang Hee, hereinafter referred to as MCST) and the Arts Management Support Center (CEO Moon Young-ho, hereinafter referred to as the Center) will hold the exhibition "Manifold: How to Use" at the Hangaram Design Museum of the Seoul Arts Center from November 2 to November 17.
The exhibition "Manifold: How to Use," from the collector's perspective, is part of the "Preliminary Exclusive Artist Support" project promoted by the Arts Management Support Center since 2019.
The "Preliminary Exclusive Artist Support" project aims to create an environment where full-time emerging artists can create stably and to support galleries in discovering and nurturing outstanding artists, thereby helping sustainable collaboration and growth between galleries and artists.
This exhibition introduces seven excellent galleries selected through this project, including The Weekend Room, Gallery Soso, Artertain, and Space Willing and Dealing, which have greatly contributed to nurturing exclusive artists. It showcases about 60 works by 19 exclusive artists from each gallery, such as Kwak Sang-won, Kim Yoon-soo, and Yang Kyung-ryeol.
In this exhibition, visitors can not only view but also purchase and collect works. Notably, the exhibition space usage guide, written from the collector's perspective, is included in the catalog in a novelistic style to assist visitors and collectors.
The title "Manifold" has two meanings. First, it refers to a machine or organ connected by numerous pipes. Second, in geometric topology, it denotes a topological space resembling Euclidean space but exhibiting a non-Euclidean structure in the overall connected band, also called a "divyangche" (manifold). The organizer explains that this term symbolizes the typical contemporary art situation where multiple artists showing different artistic worlds work and exhibit together in one connected space.
The exhibition consists of nine sections, including "Remembering Objects" by Choi Ji-won, Yang Kyung-ryeol, and Lee Woo-rim; "Invitation to Gaze and Contemplation" by Song Min-gyu and Ro Wa-jung; "I am You, You are Me" by Yoo Yong-sun and Lim Ji-bin; "What the Landscape Tells Me and Does Not Tell" by Bae Sang-soon and Lee Hae-min-seon; and "A Certain Reader" by Yoon Sang-yoon and Park Kwang-sun.
These nine sections are open to each other and simultaneously arranged like a single indoor space, allowing visitors to experience the exhibition intimately, as if appreciating artworks in their own home or office space.
Art director Yoo Jin-sang stated, "The importance of collectors in the art world and art market ecosystem cannot be overstated. Recognizing that the level and capability of collectors will be the driving force for the future development of Korean art, more information and support should be invested to facilitate and expand collections. 'Manifold: How to Use' is a systematic project carried out as part of that effort."
Additionally, an exhibition official said, "The Arts Management Support Center plans to steadily develop Manifold as an archive where capable next-generation artists participate in exhibitions every year."
