[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] LG Uplus's autonomous drug delivery robot based on a communication network has been introduced in hospitals to assist in delivering various medications, from general drugs to anticancer agents and narcotic analgesics.
LG Uplus announced on the 2nd that it has supplied an autonomous drug delivery robot based on a communication network to H Plus Yangji Hospital in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
By having the robot handle simple delivery tasks, work fatigue can be reduced. Until now, the hospital deployed five staff members twice daily for drug delivery tasks, but with the robot, the number of deliveries can be increased and personnel can be managed more efficiently. It also helps prevent secondary infections within the hospital that may occur when people deliver medications directly.
The drug delivery robot operating at Yangji Hospital starts from the 4th-floor pharmacy department and takes the elevator to move to the nursing stations on floors 5 to 8. It can be called and given movement commands via a control web interface. A locking mechanism is applied to the robot's drawer to reduce the risk of drug loss.
Previously, LG Uplus provided Yangji Hospital with an ‘Intelligent Visitor Management System’ capable of video analysis such as detecting human body temperature, checking mask-wearing status, and facial recognition, as well as a robot that monitors fever and mask-wearing through video analysis for secondary and tertiary monitoring even after visitors pass through gates.
LG Uplus plans to introduce various robot services in the future, including waste transport robots, UV sterilization robots, signage robots capable of promotion, and robots that enable real-time communication in emergency situations.
Seo Jae-yong, Executive Director of LG Uplus Smart Infrastructure Business, said, “Following last year’s quarantine robots, with the introduction of drug delivery robots, Yangji Hospital has been able to advance as a hospital equipped with a cutting-edge medical environment. Based on the Yangji Hospital case, we will enhance our technology and services to expand the use of robots in the domestic medical environment.”
