A man in his 40s who committed a series of robberies after removing an electronic tracking device (electronic ankle bracelet) with official permission and fled abroad has been arrested and detained by the prosecution.

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A man in his 40s who removed his electronic ankle bracelet and fled overseas while claiming to be on a business trip was apprehended. He was caught after attempting to watch Netflix on a stolen iPad.

According to the Cheonan Seobuk Police in Chungnam on the 28th, A (46), who was wanted on charges including special robbery, was arrested. A is accused of threatening an acquaintance and stealing 50 million won before fleeing abroad on the 3rd of last month.

At the time, A was wearing an electronic tracking device (ankle bracelet) due to a sexual offense. However, he obtained permission to leave the country from the Cheonan Probation Office, claiming he had to go on a business trip abroad, and committed the crime on the day of departure.

Those wearing electronic ankle bracelets are prohibited from leaving the country, but if their identity is guaranteed and the travel country and period are clear, departure is allowed after approval. In A’s case, the crime committed on the day was not reported to the probation office, allowing him to leave the country.

Two days later, the police received the case and invalidated A’s passport. They also requested a red notice from Interpol to track A. He did not return to Korea until the 17th of last month, when he said he would enter the country.

A’s location was discovered during his attempt to watch Netflix. He had stolen the iPad of a woman he was living with and fled, using the device to pay for Netflix in Dubai. Upon checking the payment details, the police tracked the iPad and found that A had moved to the Czech Republic.

The police summoned A back to Korea on the 21st, investigated the motive for the crime, and requested an arrest warrant.
