COVID-19 New Cases 2,111... Back to 2,000s After 20 Days (Update)

[Asia Economy Reporter Seo So-jeong] The number of new domestic COVID-19 cases in South Korea rose back to the 2,000 range on the 28th, marking the first time in 20 days.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, 2,111 new domestic COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 358,412. Of these, 2,095 were locally transmitted, and 16 were imported cases.


By region, Seoul reported 785 cases, Gyeonggi 707, and Incheon 136, with the metropolitan area accounting for 1,628 cases (77.7%).


Non-metropolitan areas reported 467 cases (22.3%), including Daegu 106, Chungnam 82, Chungbuk 54, Busan 51, Gyeongbuk 40, Gyeongnam 34, Jeonbuk 41, Gangwon 22, Jeonnam 12, Gwangju 7, Daejeon and Ulsan 6 each, Jeju 4, and Sejong 2.


Among the 16 imported cases, 8 were detected during quarantine, and the remaining 8 were confirmed in the community. Nine were Korean nationals, and seven were foreigners.


The death toll increased by 11 the previous day, bringing the total to 2,808, with a fatality rate of 0.78%. The number of critically ill patients stands at 345.


The number of newly released from isolation increased by 1,195, totaling 330,853.


The number of suspected cases tested was 49,879, and at temporary screening clinics set up in the metropolitan area, 78,325 tests were conducted, resulting in 639 confirmed cases. In non-metropolitan temporary screening clinics, 9,453 tests were conducted, identifying 32 confirmed cases. The total number of tests conducted was 137,657.


According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team, 76,802 people received their first dose the previous day, bringing the total number of first-dose recipients to 40,978,840. The first-dose vaccination rate relative to the population is 79.8%. Among those aged 18 and over, 92% have completed their first dose.


On the previous day, 255,616 people completed their vaccination, bringing the total number of fully vaccinated individuals to 36,978,500, with a full vaccination rate of 72% relative to the population.
