[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] As the spread of COVID-19 continues, confirmed cases have surged across the country.


According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments on the 27th, from midnight to 6 p.m. on that day, a total of 1,676 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide. This is 45 more than the 1,631 cases at the same time the previous day, and 602 more compared to 1,074 cases on October 20, a week earlier.


Looking at the regions where confirmed cases were reported, 1,292 cases (77.1%) were in the metropolitan area, and 384 cases (22.9%) were in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, there were 655 cases in Seoul, 509 in Gyeonggi, 128 in Incheon, 98 in Daegu, 79 in Chungnam, 46 in Busan, 44 in Chungbuk, 41 in Gyeongbuk, 34 in Gyeongnam, 12 in Gangwon, 10 in Jeonbuk, 7 in Gwangju, 6 in Jeonnam, 4 in Jeju, 2 in Daejeon, and 1 in Ulsan. Among the 17 cities and provinces nationwide, no confirmed cases have yet been reported in Sejong.


Since there is still time left until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at midnight on the 28th is expected to increase to around 2,000. The previous day saw an increase of 321 cases after 6 p.m., closing at a final count of 1,952 cases.


The fourth domestic wave, which began in early July, has continued for nearly four months. The daily confirmed cases have remained in the four-digit range for 113 consecutive days since July 7 (1,211 cases). The 28th will mark the 114th day.


Regarding major infection cases, in the metropolitan area, a total of 21 people were confirmed in connection with a workplace in Songpa-gu, Seoul (9th case), and a total of 20 people were confirmed related to an acquaintance gathering in Dobong-gu and Nowon-gu. At a nursing hospital in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, a total of 14 people, including 11 patients and 3 staff members, tested positive. In Incheon, 15 people were confirmed in connection with a clinic in Bupyeong-gu, and 14 people tested positive related to a middle school in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon. In Paju-si, Gyeonggi, 13 people were infected in connection with a printing material manufacturing company.


In non-metropolitan areas, a total of 11 people were confirmed in connection with a Taekwondo academy in Nonsan-si, Chungnam, and 11 people were confirmed related to a family gathering in Iksan-si, Jeonbuk.
