The Chinese government expressed its "firm opposition" to remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken supporting Taiwan's participation in UN organizations.
Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, "This violates the One-China principle, the three joint communiqu?s between China and the U.S. (agreements on mutual non-interference and reduction of arms sales to Taiwan), their own commitments, and the basic norms of international relations," adding that "it sends the wrong signal to Taiwan independence forces."
Spokesperson Zhao referred to UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 (adopted on October 25, 1971), which recognizes China as the sole representative of China in the UN, and urged the U.S. "not to send the wrong signal to Taiwan independence forces in the international community and to uphold the political foundation of China-U.S. relations through concrete actions."
The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. also emphasized in a statement that "the U.S. openly challenges the 'One-China' principle by discussing Taiwan issues in various venues and assisting Taiwan's expansion of international space," and added, "China has lodged strong dissatisfaction and made solemn representations to the U.S."
Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China, stated at a press conference that "the UN is an organization composed of sovereign states," and asserted, "Taiwan is a part of China, and the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China," arguing that "Taiwan has no right to participate in the UN."
Earlier, on the 26th (local time), Secretary Blinken issued a statement urging UN member states to support Taiwan's participation in the UN system.
He said, "We are one of many UN member states that regard Taiwan as a valuable partner and a reliable friend," and added, "Meaningful participation of Taiwan in the UN system is not a political issue but a practical one."
