Gwangju Nam-gu Launches 'Green Indoor Garden' at Bitgoeul Senior Health Town

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byung-nae) announced on the 27th that it will complete the creation of an indoor garden within Bitgoeul Senior Health Town by the end of this year.

The project involves creating an indoor garden with a total area of 800㎡ on the 1st and 2nd floors above ground and the 1st basement floor of Bitgoeul Senior Health Town. With a budget of 1 billion KRW, construction is scheduled to begin in November.

Nam-gu plans to utilize plants proven to have air-purifying effects to establish both horizontal and vertical gardens, and install resting areas and automated systems where Gwangju citizens can comfortably relax.

In particular, by reducing the concentration of organic compounds such as fine dust entering from outside and managing the building’s heating and cooling systems, the Bitgoeul Senior Health Town aims to provide visitors with clean indoor air, creating a space where they can fully enjoy the benefits of nature.

First, on the 1st basement floor, which houses the welfare center, cultural center, and gymnasium, wall greening will be carried out focusing on the lobby and corridors.

Cork vegetation boards with holes will be attached to the walls, soil will be firmly packed into each pothole to plant vegetation, and nozzles will be installed from the top to the bottom of the walls to allow water to flow down, creating an eco-friendly ecological space.

Additionally, the design concept called “Youth is a Flower” will be introduced around the lobby pillars and the three directions of corridors surrounding the welfare center, with green plants and art sculptures installed along the movement paths.

On the 1st floor above ground, around the main entrance of the cultural center and the annex restaurant, and around the cultural center on the 2nd floor above ground, resting benches made of wood will be installed in various locations, planted with eco-friendly green plants such as coral reefs, Dracaena marginata, and table palms.

Green plants such as pothos, spathiphyllum, and Boston ferns will also be planted on major walls, and pink-toned harmonies will be used to create wall surfaces reminiscent of a natural greenhouse, evoking warmth and coziness.

A Nam-gu official stated, “We will accelerate the project to create a green space filled with greenery, warmth, and clean air inside Bitgoeul Senior Health Town, where gray walls currently give a sense of desolation, so that the indoor garden can become a landmark of this place.”
