[Asia Economy Reporters Jeon Jinyoung and Park Juni] Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, visited the funeral hall of the late former President Roh Tae-woo on the 27th to pay his respects, saying it was “the minimum courtesy to the deceased.”
Lee visited the funeral hall set up at Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in the afternoon. After paying his respects, he told reporters, “I have been critical of former President Chun Doo-hwan, but I came to pay respects to former President Roh. Do you see the historical evaluation differently?” He replied, “There are both light and shadow. However, the brightness will never completely overshadow the shadows.”
He added, “Nevertheless, I appreciate that the minimum possible effort was made. Since this is his final journey, I wanted to see him off together.”
Regarding opposition within the ruling party to holding a state funeral for former President Roh, he said, “The state funeral issue has already been decided. I believe the government has made a good decision considering laws, procedures, and public sentiment.”
