[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The U.S. Department of State announced that it is raising the travel advisory for South Korea to Level 3, "Reconsider Travel." This is an additional upgrade following the previous elevation to Level 2, "Enhanced Caution," in August. The U.S. Department of State stated that this measure reflects the increased spread of COVID-19 in South Korea, and there are concerns that if the spread worsens further, the advisory could be raised to the final Level 4, "Do Not Travel."

On the 26th (local time), the U.S. Department of State announced on its website that the travel advisory for South Korea would be raised to Level 3, "Reconsider Travel," effective from the 12th of this month. The U.S. Department of State's travel advisories are divided into four levels: Level 1 "Exercise Normal Precautions," Level 2 "Enhanced Caution," Level 3 "Reconsider Travel," and Level 4 "Do Not Travel."

The U.S. Department of State explained, "This upgrade follows the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issuing a Level 3 travel health notice for South Korea, reflecting the high COVID-19 infection rate in the country. We recommend reviewing health authorities' guidance on full vaccination with FDA-approved vaccines before traveling."

This travel advisory is a recommendation for U.S. citizens visiting South Korea. The U.S. Department of State initially applied a Level 1 advisory for South Korea in June, but as the spread intensified from August, it was raised to Level 2, and now it has been elevated to Level 3. Currently, in Northeast Asia, South Korea, China, and Japan are all under Level 3 advisories.
