Seoul City Discusses Fine Dust Solutions with Major Cities like Beijing, Tokyo, and London... Hosts 'Seoul International Forum on Air Quality Improvement'


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 27th that it will hold the "2021 Seoul International Forum on Air Quality Improvement" online for two days from the 28th to the 29th to urge cities to reduce fine dust and strengthen networks between cities.


Marking its tenth year, the forum is co-hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment, with 13 cities from 8 countries participating online. Notably, Beijing and Shanghai, which attend annually, will also participate to continuously promote cooperation with China for fine dust reduction. In addition, 20 institutions and organizations including 8 domestic and international universities such as the University of Washington and Konkuk University, 4 government agencies including the National Institute of Environmental Research, 5 international organizations including UNESCAP, and 3 academic societies and groups will participate.


The forum, under the theme "Clean Air, Current Diagnosis and Future Directions," will be held in five sessions: ▲Air Quality and Health Risks ▲Air Quality Improvement in the Transportation Sector ▲Air Quality Improvement in the Living Sector ▲Latest Technologies for Air Quality Improvement ▲Public-Private Partnership.


On the first day, the 28th, the opening ceremony will begin with a video greeting from Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, emphasizing joint efforts beyond city boundaries for clean air. Following the opening ceremony, three sessions will be held covering air quality and health risks, air quality improvement in the transportation sector, and air quality improvement in the living sector.


On the second day of the forum, the 29th, two sessions on the latest technologies for air quality improvement and public-private partnership will continue. Yoo Yeon-sik, Director of the Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, "I hope this forum will be a good opportunity to encourage the cooperation of the past 10 years to regain clear skies and to lead continuous solidarity and action for the next 10 years in the future."
