[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] KT has officially confirmed that the cause of the nationwide wired and wireless communication access outage was a routing (network path configuration) error.

On the 25th at around 2:30 PM, KT stated, "First, we apologize for the inconvenience caused to the public due to the communication outage," adding, "Initially, we suspected a DDoS attack due to traffic overload, but after thorough investigation, we identified the cause as a routing error."

They continued, "We are conducting a more detailed investigation together with the government and will provide additional explanations as soon as we identify more information."

KT's wired and wireless internet network experienced communication outages starting around 11:20 AM that day, lasting for about 30 to 40 minutes. The internet outage occurred nationwide, including Seoul, the metropolitan area, Chungcheong and Honam regions, as well as Jeju Island.

The Network Safety Planning Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT is currently investigating the details of KT's communication access outage. At around 11:56 AM that day, the Ministry issued an information and communication accident crisis alert at the "caution" level.

Following the information and communication accident crisis management manual, the Ministry formed the "Broadcasting and Communication Disaster Response Situation Room," led by the Director of the Information Security Network Policy Office, to verify whether full recovery has been achieved.

Regarding the cause of the incident, they stated that various possibilities such as system errors and cyberattacks are being considered, and an in-depth investigation is underway with relevant experts. Additionally, KT has been instructed to investigate the status of user damages. The Ministry plans to prepare follow-up measures, including recurrence prevention plans, after the cause investigation is completed.

Due to the nationwide communication access outage that day, not only general customers but also small business owners and B2B (business-to-business) customers such as company and public institution servers experienced connection difficulties. Corporate customers using KT lines circumvented through SK Broadband and LG Uplus, which also affected the overall wired internet speed.
