[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will replace 55 difficult Hanja words and foreign words frequently used in public documents with Korean words.
To this end, since April, Gyeonggi Province has selected English abbreviations, loanwords, foreign words, Hanja words, and Japanese-style expressions used in public documents of the province and its affiliated organizations in cooperation with Hanyang University Korean Culture Center. Then, through a survey of about 1,400 provincial government officials, they identified public language that needs to be replaced.
The main public language frequently used and targeted for replacement includes ▲ Pandemic → (infectious disease) global outbreak ▲ Untact → non-face-to-face, contactless ▲ Gyedo (guidance) → promotion ▲ Naeju (next week) → following week ▲ Short form → short video, etc.
The province provided the list of selected public language to all provincial departments, public institutions, and cities/counties to ensure correct usage.
A provincial official emphasized, "We will continuously discover inaccurate and difficult terms and create a culture of correct Korean language use."
