[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Byeong-nae, Mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju, has attracted attention by consecutively receiving commendations from Sungkyunkwan and the Korean Senior Citizens Association for practicing filial piety and contributing to the development of senior welfare.
According to Nam-gu on the 22nd, the ‘Filial Piety Award Ceremony’ was held the day before at the Sungkyunkwan Director’s Office on the 2nd floor of the Yulim Hall in Myeongnyun-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, attended by Son Jin-woo, Director of Sungkyunkwan, Mayor Kim Byeong-nae, and Kim Jung-chae, Jeongyo of Gwangju Hyanggyo.
Mayor Kim was awarded the Filial Piety Award for promoting senior policies such as providing longevity filial piety allowances to filial families where three generations, including direct ascendants and descendants aged 80 or older, live together, and supporting longevity congratulatory money for seniors aged 100 or older.
He was also recognized for supporting operating expenses for 242 senior centers in the district so that seniors could spend happy and comfortable time there, and for providing vitality to seniors by opening the Euddeumhyo TV Broadcasting Station as part of psychological quarantine against COVID-19 and hosting silver singing contests.
In addition, he earned the honor of receiving the Filial Piety Award by establishing senior centers in small apartment complexes and investing over 1 billion won in expansion construction to address inconveniences caused by the aging facilities of the Nam-gu Senior Welfare Center, a health playground for seniors.
Son Jin-woo, Director of Sungkyunkwan, said, “Due to his gentle character and strong sense of mission, he has practiced the spirit of respect for elders and led by example in promoting filial culture, earning widespread praise for filial piety in the local community, which is why he was awarded the Filial Piety Commendation.”
Prior to this, Mayor Kim also received a commendation from the Korean Senior Citizens Association for his contribution to the development of senior welfare on the occasion of the ‘25th Senior Citizens Day.’
Kim Ho-il, President of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, said, “He has greatly contributed to improving senior welfare through dedicated volunteer spirit by providing emergency safety and security services to seniors aged 65 or older living alone and delivering meals to seniors with mobility difficulties, which is why this award was given.”
Mayor Kim stated, “While wishing for the health and longevity of seniors in the district, I will actively promote the culture of filial piety so that respect for elders can spread more widely, and faithfully implement various policies such as supporting leisure activities so that seniors can enjoy a healthy and vibrant life.”
