[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate (current Governor of Gyeonggi Province), criticized former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol on the 22nd for posting a photo on SNS giving an apple to his pet dog after apologizing for the 'Jeon Du-hwan defense controversy,' saying, "He should be punished even if it means enacting a Korean version of the Holocaust law."
After visiting the May 18th cemetery that day, Candidate Lee said on Facebook, "The person who trampled Gwangju with military boots and fired from a helicopter was Jeon Du-hwan," adding, "Acts of praising and defending someone who violated South Korea's democracy and killed citizens can never be forgiven."
He continued, "In Europe, there is the so-called 'Holocaust denial punishment law.' It punishes those who praise Nazis or deny Nazi crimes," explaining, "Germany imposes up to five years imprisonment or fines, France has detention penalties, and the European Union (EU) can punish with up to three years imprisonment through agreements."
Candidate Lee said, "A Korean version of the Holocaust denial punishment law is necessary," and pointed out, "Former Prosecutor General Yoon is spreading secondary harm by posting a photo of eating an apple without remorse despite praising Jeon Du-hwan. Considering his previous irrational remarks and philosophy, it is not surprising, but I can only apologize to the citizens who are hurt again by the praise of Jeon Du-hwan."
He added, "Crimes committed by state violence must never be tolerated," and said, "As long as the criminal is alive, every time a new crime is revealed, they must be strictly compensated and punished. Once again, I think of the honor and dignity of the May spirits of Gwangju."
