Hosted by the Namwon International Ceramic Art Research Center (Chairman Kim Kwang-gil) and sponsored by Jeonbuk Province and Namwon City, this camp will be conducted in a two-track format, both online and offline, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Artists from 14 countries including Greece, Spain, Japan, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and Turkey, totaling 127 participants, will showcase a variety of ceramic works from around the world.
The theme of this camp is ‘Today is Today,’ reflecting the hope to overcome COVID-19, inspired by the song Namwon potters sang to keep their spirits alive when they were taken to Japan.
The event features a high-quality and diverse international program including a planned invitational exhibition of domestic and international ceramic artists, an invited artists’ workshop, special lectures, and a pottery wheel competition.
In particular, the pottery wheel competition held on the 23rd at Namwon Sarangui Square attracts participants from various groups nationwide, including university students, graduate students, professional potters, and arts high school students.
Champions who have demonstrated excellent skills in national competitions such as Gangjin and Yeoju are participating, promising fierce competition.
Chairman Lee Seok-bo said, “This camp prioritizes safety under the great cause of overcoming COVID-19, and I pay tribute to the passionate dedication of the artists who continue their research despite difficult circumstances. Namwon, the hometown where the artistic spirit of Joseon potters lives and breathes, will be the foundation for continuing the legacy of world ceramics.”
Mayor Lee Hwan-joo said, “The 10th Namwon International Ceramic Camp this year revitalizes Namwon’s ceramic culture and is a more meaningful event as it serves as a venue for new ceramic techniques and technology exchange with participation from various domestic and international artists.”
Meanwhile, the Namwon International Ceramic Camp is held annually to promote the history and excellence of Namwon’s ceramic culture, which produced the world-renowned Satsuma ceramics, and to foster the development and globalization of Namwon’s ceramic industry through exchanges and exhibitions with international artists.
