[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A man in his 50s who set fire to an electric wheelchair because there was no space to park his vehicle was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

On the 21st, the 15th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Chief Judge Lee Gyuhun) announced that Mr. A (58), who was indicted on charges of arson of general property, was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension. Mr. A was also placed under probation.

Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of setting fire to a mat placed on an electric wheelchair on a residential street in Seo-gu, Incheon, at 2:23 a.m. on June 3.

As a result, the electric wheelchair and two parked vehicles were damaged by fire, causing property damage.

It was investigated that he set fire to the electric wheelchair out of anger because he could not park his own vehicle.

The court stated, "Due to Mr. A's arson, the electric wheelchair and two parked vehicles were burned, and one of the vehicles was scrapped," adding, "Mr. A has not compensated for the damages caused by the crime."

It further explained the sentencing rationale, saying, "However, considering comprehensively that Mr. A admitted to the crime, has no prior record of similar offenses, and that the vehicle owners do not wish to press charges."
