[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced the third-quarter earnings wearing the green tracksuit featured in the Korean drama 'Ojingeo Geim' (Squid Game).
At the online earnings announcement event on the 19th (local time), CEO Hastings smiled broadly when it was revealed that paid subscribers increased in the third quarter thanks to 'Ojingeo Geim,' Netflix's biggest hit in history.
After the third-quarter earnings announcement, Netflix released a video of the 'earnings briefing' attended by executives on YouTube. In the video, CEO Hastings and Spencer Wang, Vice President of Investor Relations, appeared wearing the training tops worn by participants in 'Ojingeo Geim.'
Hastings compared the success of 'Ojingeo Geim' to a 'content engine.' He said, "The Korean content team discovered 'Ojingeo Geim.' I did not anticipate the success of 'Ojingeo Geim.' The next hit following 'Ojingeo Geim' will also come from an unexpected place."
He added, "It is really difficult to predict how and which work will go viral, but when it happens, the impact is very powerful. Sometimes predictions are wrong, but sometimes there are amazing Korean dramas that achieve great success."
In the earnings announcement, Netflix revealed that 142 million paid members watched the drama for at least two minutes during the first 28 days after its release in mid-September. The economic media CNBC reported, "This corresponds to 66% of global subscribers."
