[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do, has taken a bold step by establishing a ‘Seafood Food Export Center’ as a visionary measure to open export routes for local seafood products.
On the 20th, the city held a founding members’ meeting and inaugural board meeting at the Mokpo City Hall situation room to adopt the establishment purpose statement, draft articles of incorporation, executive appointments (draft), various regulations, and business plans for the establishment of the export center, which were reviewed and resolved.
The founding members of the export center, which will support the efficient operation of the seafood food export complex to be created in the Daeyang Industrial Complex, included 15 participants such as Mokpo Mayor Kim Jong-sik, representatives from the seafood food industry, business sectors, related organizations, and associations.
Mayor Kim Jong-sik stated, “We expect the export center to serve as a solid cornerstone for the growth of the seafood export industry and to play a pivotal role in Mokpo’s leap to become South Korea’s number one seafood food export city.”
The founding members agreed through the establishment purpose statement that the export center will ensure sustainable regional economic growth with the vision of ‘enhancing the global export competitiveness of the seafood food industry’ and ‘creating quality jobs.’
To establish the export center as a funded institution, the city completed a feasibility study for the foundation establishment in September from the Gwangju Jeonnam Research Institute, a specialized feasibility review institution designated by Jeollanam-do under the ‘Local Public Investment and Contribution Act.’
Subsequently, the city enacted and promulgated the ‘Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation Support of the Mokpo Seafood Food Export Center Foundation’ to provide the legal basis for the foundation’s establishment and support.
The export center plans to officially begin operations in January next year after completing administrative procedures such as applying for foundation establishment approval from Jeollanam-do, registering the foundation, business registration, and staff recruitment.
The export center will be composed of five teams: Administrative Support Team, Facility Safety Team, Quality Control and Certification Team, Production Process Packaging Team, and Export Specialized Support Team, performing research and support functions for adding high value to seafood and industrializing exports.
Meanwhile, on the 15th, the city held the final report meeting for the design service of the seafood food export complex project and plans to complete the detailed design by April 2022 after consultations with central government ministries and complete construction by 2023.
