[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in will attend ASEAN-related summits via video conference on the 26th and 27th, further strengthening the strategic partnership with ASEAN.
A Blue House official stated on the 20th, "President Moon is scheduled to attend the Korea-ASEAN Summit and the Korea-Mekong Summit on the 26th, as well as the ASEAN+3 Summit and the East Asia Summit (EAS) on the 27th."
The ASEAN-related summits are annual meetings involving the 10 ASEAN countries and dialogue partners, and considering the COVID-19 situation, they will be held virtually again this year following last year.
At the Korea-ASEAN Summit on the 26th, the cooperation achievements between Korea and ASEAN based on the New Southern Policy will be evaluated, and the commitment to cooperation under the New Southern Policy will be expressed. Later that evening, at the 3rd Korea-Mekong Summit, which marks the 10th anniversary of Korea-Mekong cooperation, ways to strengthen cooperation will be discussed.
At the 24th ASEAN+3 Summit held on the afternoon of the 27th, opinions will be exchanged on ways to strengthen ASEAN+3 cooperation in key areas such as health, finance, and the economy to overcome COVID-19. At the 16th East Asia Summit (EAS), held late that evening, leaders will exchange views on regional and international affairs.
The Blue House stated, "This meeting will comprehensively review the achievements of the New Southern Policy, which our government has focused on for the past four years, and ASEAN and regional partner countries will jointly respond to the COVID-19 crisis as well as review cooperation systems to prepare for future crises." It added, "We will continue to actively participate in consultative bodies with ASEAN to expand the foundation for realizing the vision of a ‘people-centered community of peace and prosperity.’"
