[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Yuhan-Kimberly announced on the 20th that it plans to actively support the guarantee of equal and universal menstrual rights for women in celebration of "Menstruation Day" and to launch an educational support project for the use of sanitary pads by women with developmental disabilities.

The support project is conducted by providing the independently developed First Menstruation Panties by Joheunnimkeum, along with teaching aids and educational videos, so that women who need repetitive practice in using sanitary pads and girls who have just started menstruating can learn how to change sanitary pads more easily and comfortably.

Before fully launching the support project, Joheunnimkeum conducted education using the First Menstruation Panties at 10 pilot schools last year. Based on on-site feedback, related teaching aids and educational content have been supplemented. In addition to educational videos for school settings, separate videos for students and guardians were produced and provided for home learning, receiving positive responses, the company added.

This year, Joheunnimkeum supported a total of 980 sets of educational products and teaching aids to 98 special schools. Furthermore, over the next 10 years, the plan is to gradually expand the support targets beyond special schools for intellectual disabilities to include special schools for emotional and physical disabilities, general schools, and even children experiencing their first menstruation.

The development of the First Menstruation Panties began in February 2019 with a letter from a special school teacher. Yuhan-Kimberly’s Joheunnimkeum sanitary pad division confirmed that changing sanitary pads itself is a significant challenge for women with developmental disabilities and that there are difficulties related to menstruation depending on the type of disability. They developed the product in cooperation with the Health Teachers Association. The inside of the waterproof sanitary panties is designed with a pad-shaped pattern to intuitively indicate how to attach the pad, and it was designed to help users become familiar with attaching and changing sanitary pads through repetitive practice.

A Joheunnimkeum official said, “Along with the sanitary pad education support activities of the ‘Cheer Up, Daughters’ campaign, we hope that menstruation will become a more comfortable journey for all women, rather than an unfamiliar or fearful experience.”

Yuhan-Kimberly has been running the ‘Cheer Up, Daughters’ campaign for six years to support vulnerable female adolescents who have difficulty purchasing sanitary pads, donating approximately 7.5 million pads to date.
