[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Korean Air is partnering with Boeing of the United States to enhance domestic maintenance capabilities for rotary-wing aircraft operated by the South Korean military.

Korean Air announced on the 19th that it signed a "Memorandum of Understanding for Technical Cooperation on Military Rotary-Wing Aircraft" with Boeing at the "2021 Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX 2021)" held at Seoul Airport in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

The event was attended by Lee Su-geun, Vice President of Korean Air's Operations Division, Maria Lane, Vice President of Boeing's Aviation Division, and other representatives from both companies.

According to the memorandum, Korean Air and Boeing will mutually cooperate in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector to improve domestic maintenance capabilities for rotary-wing aircraft such as Apache and Chinook, which the South Korean military operates for special operations and transport missions.

Currently, Korean Air operates the largest military aircraft performance upgrade and comprehensive maintenance facility in the Asia-Pacific region, with a track record of maintaining and upgrading over 4,700 military aircraft, including Korean and U.S. fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters.

Vice President Lee said, "The cooperation between Korean Air, which possesses the best aircraft performance upgrade and MRO technology domestically, and Boeing, which holds the world's leading military aircraft technology, is expected to greatly contribute to enhancing domestic maintenance capabilities for our military's rotary-wing aircraft."

Vice President Maria Lane emphasized, "In today's security environment, it is important not only to introduce new aircraft but also to have stable and efficient operational management technologies."

Through this agreement, the two companies plan to support Boeing's data-driven follow-up logistics support services for Apache and Chinook helicopters. They will also explore joint participation in future South Korean rotary-wing aircraft acquisition projects and expand cooperation in other technical fields, including follow-up logistics support projects in overseas markets.
