Ministry of Employment to Inspect Delivery Companies... "Must Reduce Accidents" [Image source=Yonhap News]

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 19th that it will inspect 28 platform companies nationwide by next month to reduce industrial accident incidents among food delivery workers, which have been continuously occurring recently. This means investigating companies that operate smartphone applications that mediate between restaurants requiring delivery and delivery workers.

These companies are considered delivery intermediaries under the Industrial Safety and Health Act. According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, they have the obligation to regularly inform delivery workers about safe driving and not to urge deliveries to the extent that causes industrial accidents. If the company signs consignment contracts with delivery workers and works together on delivery tasks, it must provide safety and health education to the workers and instruct them to wear protective gear.

Kwon Gisub, Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Headquarters, said, "This is the first workplace inspection targeting only food delivery platform operators," adding, "Through the inspection, we will analyze the causes of industrial accidents involving delivery workers more thoroughly and examine supplementary measures to reduce accidents."
