[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 19th that it has secured the highest level 1-grade performance technology for inter-floor noise insulation, the first of its kind in Korea.

Inter-floor noise is divided into lightweight impact noise caused by light impacts and heavyweight impact noise caused by heavy and large impacts such as adult walking and children running. Among these, heavyweight impact noise is particularly the cause of disputes between households.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction explained that by additionally applying special materials to the existing floor structure system, it has secured the only 1-grade technology in Korea that blocks heavyweight impact noise. The 1-grade level for blocking heavyweight impact noise means that excessive impacts from the upper floor are almost imperceptible on the lower floor.

The company emphasized the significance of verifying this achievement through on-site demonstration rather than just laboratory testing. The test results were officially confirmed by the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), a nationally accredited testing institution, verifying a 39dB performance for heavyweight impact noise blocking with the Bang Machine (a floor noise measurement device equipped with tires) at the 1-grade level.

The improved floor structure system this time is an upgraded version of the ‘H Silent Home System I’ unveiled last May. It controls the inherent vibration frequency of impacts by additionally applying materials specialized in high-performance cushioning. The materials applied in this system are divided into ‘Vibration Suppression (Silent Base)’ and ‘Impact Control (Silent Plate),’ which can more effectively reduce vibrations and impact noise generated when people walk or run.

The company plans to continue investing in research and development (R&D) not only for inter-floor noise technology but also for quality improvements to enhance resident customer satisfaction through its technology research institute, which has the largest laboratory and workforce in Korea.

A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official said, "Due to COVID-19, the time spent at home has increased with remote work and online education, leading to growing demands for reducing apartment inter-floor noise," adding, "Our goal is to create apartments where children can run freely without worry, and we will continue research to improve residents’ satisfaction with inter-floor noise."
