[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] Jeonnam Yeosu City announced on the 18th that it will hold the ‘2021 International Island Forum in Yeosu’ to create an atmosphere for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and to enhance the status of a MICE certified city.
This forum, under the theme of ‘Climate Change and Islands,’ will feature about 20 panelists from seven countries (UK, USA, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Fiji, and Korea) consisting of experts in marine, island, climate change, and island residents.
From the 20th to the 21st, about 450 participants worldwide will join in a hybrid format combining online video conferencing and face-to-face meetings at the Hidden Bay Hotel to discuss actionable plans for biodiversity conservation in response to climate change.
Starting with the opening ceremony, the main event will proceed with a keynote speech and four session programs, each with its own sub-theme. Side events include a ‘Painting Exhibition’ related to climate change and islands prepared by the Yeosu Young Artists Association, and ‘Island Taste Stories,’ where participants can experience 16 types of island dishes led by a Yeosu local cuisine expert.
In accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, all event programs including the opening ceremony will be conducted both online and offline and will be broadcast live in real-time via the YouTube channel Yeosu Iyagi.
A city official stated, “The International Island Forum is an event that Yeosu City has been promoting annually since 2018 as part of its regional specialized MICE efforts,” adding, “Especially this year, linked with the decision to host the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo made on August 9, it will be an opportunity to introduce our Yeosu to the world.”
