Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok: "We Will Mobilize All Capabilities to Host COP33"

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, expressed regret on the 18th over the government's concession of hosting the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and stated his intention to concentrate all efforts to attract the 33rd conference.

On the same day, Governor Kim issued a "Statement on the Government's Announcement of Concession for Hosting COP28," saying, "Since the government has announced the decision to host COP33, we will shift to attracting COP33 and continue the momentum to respond to climate change and achieve carbon neutrality."

The province plans to consult with the COP28 Namhaean Southern Central Region Hosting Committee to consider transforming its role into an implementation committee for attracting COP33, responding to climate change, and practicing carbon neutrality.

In particular, to attract COP33 and become a leading region in global carbon neutrality and climate change response, the province plans to designate the Namhaean Southern Central Region centered on Yeosu as a climate change response leading district, and propose to the government the enactment of the "Special Act on Climate Change Response Leading District" including the establishment of support institutions, as well as the creation of a "Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Industrial Complex."

Governor Kim emphasized, "Considering Jeonnam Province's 13 years of aspiration and preparations for hosting COP28, I strongly urge the government to designate the COP33 host city as the Namhaean Southern Central Region centered on Yeosu," and added, "We will actively make efforts to respond to climate change, supplement insufficient convention and accommodation facilities, and unite all capabilities with the residents to do our best to attract COP33."
