Gwangju Hakdong Disaster Citizens' Committee "Urges Strict Judgment on Hyundai Development Company"

Gwangju Hakdong Disaster Citizens' Committee "Urges Strict Judgment on Hyundai Development Company" The Gwangju Hakdong Disaster Citizens' Countermeasures Committee is holding a press conference on the 18th urging a strict judgment on HDC Hyundai Development Company.

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju Hakdong Disaster Citizens' Countermeasure Committee raised its voice on the 18th, urging the court to "deliver a strict judgment on HDC Hyundai Development Company, which has been identified as the cause of the accident."

The Citizens' Countermeasure Committee for the Hakdong Disaster held a press conference in front of the Gwangju District Court at 10 a.m. that day and made this claim.

The committee said, "Today is the day of the first consolidated hearing since the Hakdong disaster," adding, "We expect this to be the starting point for holding the defendants accountable for their illegal actions," and "We hope that the court's strict judgment will clearly demonstrate that justice still lives in our society."

The committee condemned, "Hyundai Development Company announced right after the accident that it would make its best efforts to restore the victims' damages, but in reality, no substantial damage recovery for the bereaved families has been made," and "We cannot help but suspect that this is an insincere empty promise to avoid crisis."

They stated, "Hyundai Development Company is even denying the fact of illegal subcontracting, which has been revealed through concrete evidence in the police investigation," and "This is a declaration that they will take no responsibility whatsoever."

Furthermore, they urged, "The bereaved families and victims of this case hope for a thorough investigation of the truth behind this disaster, which is a man-made disaster typical of developing countries, punishment of those responsible, and proper improvement measures to prevent such tragic accidents where innocent citizens of our society become victims from happening again."

Finally, they added, "During this National Assembly audit, it was confirmed that Hyundai Development Company was deeply involved in the selection of non-resident demolition supervision, revealing that the police investigation was inadequate one by one," and "We hope that the consolidated hearing and strict trial process will clearly reveal the facts of the case and provide an opportunity to urge the police investigation."
