[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Are you familiar with the ‘uri’ grapes, sweet and crisp grapes eaten with the skin on?
A domestically cultivated grape variety called ‘Hongju Seedless’ has been developed.
The Gyeongbuk Sangju Agricultural Technology Center shipped the first batch of the domestically bred grape variety ‘Hongju Seedless,’ which has been distributed since 2017 to diversify varieties and strengthen competitiveness, on the 18th.
Hongju Seedless is a variety cultivated on about 7,000㎡ by farmers Kim Si-ho and Jang Kyung-seok in Hwadong-myeon, and it is being shipped at 27,000 KRW per 2kg, emerging as a profitable item surpassing the price of existing varieties.
This year, the number of farms and cultivation area are small, resulting in a low shipment volume, but from next year, the area is expected to expand and the harvest volume to increase.
It is planned to be developed as a specialized crop in the Sangju region, and it is expected to promote the excellence of our variety both domestically and internationally.
The Hongju Seedless variety was developed and distributed by the Rural Development Administration and is a grape that can be eaten with its red skin on.
It has a crisp texture with high sweetness and aroma. Hongju Seedless has been distributed through pilot projects since 2017, contributing to variety diversification and expected to enhance competitiveness.
Jung Yong-hwa, Director of Technology Distribution, said, “To prevent overproduction of a single variety and respond to imported fruits, we are focusing on strengthening agricultural product competitiveness by distributing promising new varieties in addition to Hongju Seedless through variety diversification.”
