[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] Seventeen American missionaries, including children, were kidnapped in Haiti, a poor Caribbean country known as a lawless zone.

According to The New York Times, on the 16th (local time), 17 people including missionaries and their families were kidnapped by a criminal gang in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. They were reportedly abducted while leaving an orphanage in Port-au-Prince.

The New York Times reported that local officials said the missionaries were kidnapped from a bus heading to the airport to drop off some missionaries before moving to another destination.

Haiti has been experiencing political turmoil for years, and kidnappings have been carried out indiscriminately against both the rich and the poor. In July, then-President Jovenel Mo?se was assassinated by assailants at his residence.
