[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] As the senior representatives for North Korea's nuclear issue from South Korea, the United States, and Japan are set to meet in Washington, USA on the 19th, the intelligence chiefs of the three countries are reportedly holding a private meeting in Seoul around the same time to discuss North Korea-related matters.
According to diplomatic sources on the 17th, Park Jie-won, Director of the National Intelligence Service of Korea, plans to meet with Avril Haines, Director of the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and Hiroaki Takizawa, Cabinet Intelligence Officer of Japan, who will visit Seoul early next week.
This will be their first meeting in Seoul in five months since their last meeting in Tokyo, Japan in May.
They are expected to focus on discussing North Korea issues, including sharing assessments of recent developments on the Korean Peninsula such as North Korea's missile test launches.
Coinciding with the meeting of the three countries' senior representatives on North Korea's nuclear issue in Washington, D.C. at the same time, the three countries are likely to hold close consultations on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
They are also expected to exchange opinions on the declaration of the end of the Korean War, which President Moon Jae-in repeatedly emphasized at the United Nations General Assembly last month.
Additionally, from the U.S. perspective, there is a possibility of discussing ways to effectively check China through cooperation with South Korea, Japan, and others.
