[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 17th that it operated the 'Korea UHD Showcase 2021' online and held export consultation meetings from the 11th to the 15th at 'MIPCOM 2021,' the world's largest video content market, to promote the overseas expansion of excellent domestic broadcasting content.
The online showcase, prepared to promote the excellence of Korean ultra-high-definition broadcasting content worldwide, featured 62 UHD contents from 32 domestic broadcasting and production companies. This year, by including new technology convergence content, it attracted the attention of overseas broadcasting and production officials with pioneering production techniques such as mixed reality (XR) studios and new attempts utilizing AI.
Through this event, international co-production contracts worth a total of $500,000 were signed. For the three-country joint web drama 'Dream Together,' production companies from Malaysia and Indonesia are investing a total of $300,000.
Additionally, the submitted works were selected in the 'Fresh TV' format category, one of the main screenings at MIPCOM. During the export consultation period, a total of 134 consultations (worth $4.65 million) on content investment and purchase were conducted.
Oh Yong-su, Director of Broadcasting Promotion Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “The status of Korean broadcasting content in overseas markets is rising day by day,” and added, “We will continue to strengthen support for next-generation broadcasting content such as ultra-high-definition (UHD) and new technology convergence to ensure that the flow of the new Korean Wave continues in the next-generation broadcasting content market.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to continue supporting the overseas expansion of broadcasting content by inviting overseas broadcasters and production companies through the online 'Next-Generation Media Networking Day' held during the first week of November at the '2021 Next-Generation Media Week.'
