Samsung and LG Electronics Compete in Eco-Friendly Home Appliances

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] As ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management spreads as a global trend, the home appliance industry is also strengthening its competitiveness in eco-friendly products by showcasing differentiated technologies. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are fiercely competing by launching various eco-friendly products such as those with improved energy efficiency or resource circulation capabilities.

According to the industry on the 16th, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics participated in the '2021 Korea Energy Show' held at KINTEX in Ilsan from the 13th to the 15th, showcasing numerous products incorporating eco-friendly energy-saving technologies.

First, Samsung’s Wind-Free System Air Conditioner 4Way improved the energy efficiency of key components such as the heat exchanger and fan and optimized the refrigerant cycle design. All 10 models released this year received the highest grade 1 energy consumption efficiency certification. Compared to previous products, cooling efficiency improved by an average of 26%, heating efficiency by an average of 34%, and it obtained Korea’s Green Technology Certification by implementing low carbon emissions through Wind-Free technology.

The Bespoke Grande Dryer AI applied high-efficiency technology to the heat pump and drying control, achieving grade 1 energy consumption efficiency. The 360-degree air holes distribute abundant air evenly, allowing large amounts of laundry to dry quickly. The Bespoke dishwasher reduced energy consumption by 5% by lowering the heating temperature of the final rinse water.

The Bespoke Family Hub refrigerator reduced standby power consumption by 66% through motor efficiency improvements and an automatic display power-saving mode. The solar cell remote control applied to the 2021 QLED TV can be charged using sunlight or indoor lighting, reducing power consumption by more than 80% compared to conventional remotes.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics emphasizes its strength in AI-based total energy solutions. The 'LG AI Engine' optimizes indoor environments and saves energy through continuous on-site learning based on situational information such as temperature, humidity, number of people, and activity levels. It received the NET (New Excellent Technology) certification awarded by the Korea Industrial Technology Association for outstanding new technologies.

LG’s eco-friendly residential solutions include a residential ventilation system that recovers emitted heat energy to save energy, and the LG Sensor Hub, which displays indoor air quality information and power consumption and can control LG smart appliances. In the business solutions sector, there are energy storage systems (ESS), hybrid heat pump system air conditioners that combine the advantages of electric and gas types to reduce heating and cooling costs, and system air conditioners with air-cleaning elevator grills that improve cleaning and maintenance convenience.

Additionally, LG Electronics recently applied eco-friendly packaging materials to its system air conditioners. The foam plastic used for outdoor unit packaging is reusable and has the advantages of high cushioning performance and durability.

An industry official said, "As interest in 'ethical consumption' grows mainly among the MZ generation, the importance of eco-friendly consumption that minimizes the burden on the global environment is being emphasized. In the home appliance industry, technological competition is intensifying to launch products with high eco-friendliness by carefully considering everything from energy efficiency to the recyclability of packaging materials."
