Health Authorities "Investigating Causality"
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] In Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, a female college student died six days after receiving the Moderna vaccine, and health authorities are investigating whether there is a causal relationship.
According to the family of the deceased female college student A on the 15th, A showed symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, numbness in the limbs, and menstrual irregularities after receiving the first dose of the Moderna vaccine at an internal medicine clinic on the 8th of last month.
Two days later, on the 10th, at a psychiatric clinic she visited, the opinion was given that "The patient is someone who had been receiving outpatient treatment at this hospital, and after two days of sleep deprivation following vaccination, she showed symptoms such as incoherent speech and auditory hallucinations... (omitted) ...it is considered necessary for her to be admitted to a protected ward for treatment."
Based on this medical referral, the family admitted A to a psychiatric hospital the next morning, but on the second day of hospitalization, around 10:40 p.m. on the 13th, her blood pressure and pulse dropped, and she suffered cardiac arrest. A was transferred to a university hospital by the 119 emergency medical team and died around 5 a.m. on the 14th, about six hours later.
A’s older sister posted a petition on the Blue House website on the 6th titled "I will not let my sudden sister’s death be in vain," which received over 10,000 signatures within ten days.
In the post, A’s sister said, "Currently, the correlation between vaccination and mental illness has not been established, and there are no precautions that mental illness patients need to know when receiving the vaccine." She added, "Please clarify the correlation between vaccination and mental illness symptoms, and allow mental illness patients, like those with other underlying conditions, to be fully informed of the risks of the vaccine and to choose whether to get vaccinated."
She added, "I cannot believe or understand that my healthy sister (who had no illnesses other than bipolar disorder) suddenly experienced a drop in blood pressure and pulse leading to cardiac arrest."
She continued, "I have three requests for the national system," including ▲ increasing the number of emergency medical teams and personnel ▲ mandatory placement of psychiatric doctors in hospital emergency rooms ▲ prioritizing health status checks for mental illness patients.
Meanwhile, a Hwaseong City official stated, "The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency is investigating the association between the vaccination and A’s death case that occurred last month."
