[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] On the 14th, President Moon Jae-in congratulated Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, at the 'Balanced Development Achievements and Ultra-wide-area Cooperation Support Strategy Report' event held in Sejong City.

Candidate Lee participated in the event in his capacity as Governor of Gyeonggi Province. It is known that President Moon's congratulatory remarks were made during the process of moving for a photo session after the event.

This was the first time President Moon met Candidate Lee since the ruling party's presidential candidate was selected. However, since Lee participated in the event as Governor of Gyeonggi Province, a separate meeting between the President and the ruling party's presidential candidate is expected to be arranged. Candidate Lee, who expressed his intention to participate in the National Assembly audit in his capacity as Governor of Gyeonggi Province, is expected to meet President Moon at the Blue House after the audit.

Meanwhile, Park Kyung-mi, spokesperson for the Blue House, stated, "President Moon attended the 'Balanced Development Achievements and Ultra-wide-area Cooperation Support Strategy Report' event held this afternoon at the Government Sejong Convention Center."

The event proceeded with President Moon's opening remarks, followed by a presentation from the Chairperson of the National Balanced Development Committee on the necessity of ultra-wide-area cooperation and support directions, presentations on ultra-wide-area cooperation cases by local government heads by region, and a joint ultra-wide-area cooperation promotion strategy report by the Ministers of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Song Ha-jin, Governor of Jeonbuk Province and Chairperson of the Council of Governors, said, "The will for local autonomy and balanced development is stronger than ever, and significant achievements have been made," adding, "I believe substantial progress has been made even in fiscal decentralization."

Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong City, stated, "The four governors of the Chungcheong region have a strong will regarding the Chungcheong Mega City," and argued, "As regional balanced New Deal projects are being promoted, local governments must actively step forward."

Representing the Seoul metropolitan area, Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, said, "Regarding the policy that President Moon is focusing on to create a multi-polar system, as one of the metropolitan area heads, I think it is an important policy for the sustainable development of the entire country and for resolving the overconcentration policy in the metropolitan area," expressing his intention to cooperate as much as possible.

Ha Byung-pil, Acting Governor of Gyeongnam Province, stated, "The construction of the Bujeon~Masan metropolitan railway is the core of the mega city and requires strong government support."

Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum emphasized, "The alternative to concentration in the metropolitan area is not a top-down approach by central ministries but a new card called ultra-wide-area cooperation, where local governments raise their voices on the ground."

In his closing remarks, President Moon said, "I will take your comments today into careful consideration and do my best until the end of my term for a more balanced development of the Republic of Korea," adding, "I do not think this is a task that our government can complete alone, and I will do my utmost to lay a proper foundation so that the next government can continue this work."
